the new pope, ktvu's john sasaki continues our coverage. john? >> reporter: st. mary's is the primary church for the diocese and today was the place to be for celebrating the church's new leader. [ singing ] >> reporter: this afternoon's service began with the procession and the archbishop expressed gratitude. >> first pope from the americas. >> reporter: this was a normal service but many people felt they had to be here today for the pope. >> special taking the name francis for our city of san francisco. reach out to the poor. >> reporter: he summed up the feeling in unconventional terms. >> this is an emotional high for us. >> reporter: pope francis was an unknown before yesterday but they learned about him quickly. >> i am impressed that he road the bus. he did his own cooking. >> he preaches -- simple life. i think that is very encouraging. >> we had to pray hard the holy spirit would give us what we need and we have it. >> the pope opposes gay marriage. something the archbishop could be overcome in san francisco. >> i hope someone who has been so strong on social justice issues.

in involving several cases of wine. ktvu's john sasaki sin san francisco and tells us this wine was worth a lot of money. john? >> reporter: frank, that is right. this is a $5 bottle and each bottle was worth 200 times that amount. details are sketchy but it was tuesday that someone broke into this building in san francisco and into fine wines international. they stole 80 80 bottles of wine, more than $100,000. they have been here for more than 30 years. their less pricy bottles cost $20,000 a case and one costs $37,000 a case. police are trying to find out if this was a crime of opportunity or something else. >> when someone breaks in, you never know what they will get and the police department always looks into whether or not this place was cased, was it a random act or inside job. that is something the police department always looks at. >> reporter: police want to hear from anyone who may have seen something here the other night. live in san francisco, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> chevron reduced the bonehouse ceo will -- bonus the ceo will receive due to the fire in august. they cu

from a san bruno elementary school. john sasaki is live with more on why they did it and left a bloody mess behind. john? >> reporter: gasia, this is where the bad guys got in, cut this chain and through the gate and broke into the technology classroom. a small window and a door had to be replaced today after someone broke through a door and made off with a collection of mac book computers last night. >> that's sad that you think that's okay, to steal from kids. >> reporter: the thieves got into the roomfuly stocked with imac computers and filled with ipads, ipods, and computers but went straight to the newest and most expensive mac books. >> not only a loss for the children and what they're losing, the technology but for children when something like this happens, it scares them. >> i think whoever took these knew exactly this was the most expensive computer in the room. >> reporter: raising the possibility that the criminals knew the layout and the way each computer was stored. they dropped four of them outside while getting away. >> why? why would somebody do that? that's why i was a

that standoff just ended. over the course of the standoff there was gunfire back and forth. john sasaki is here now and tells us what he's just learned about what happened to the suspect inside. john. >> reporter: frank, this has been a very tense day here in vallejo. we're at the corner of illinois street and sonoma. a pink and white house which has a gaping hole in the front. an armored vehicle slammed into it this afternoon. this episode started around 11:30 when police received calls about a man with a rifle. dozens of officers rushed to the scene, blocked off the area and started negotiating with the man. at some point he either fired with the officers or pointed his weapon at them. officer opened fire, unleashing perhaps dozens of rounds. they rammed the vehicle into that house. a short time later the man was found dead inside. >> we heard police outside. when we looked out the window we saw the police and commotion. >> as we were trying to get him to give up peacefully he came to the front of the residence, broke a window out with a shotgun and pointed it at the officers. the officers fi

of police about just how violent some of these gang members are. john sasaki has the story. >> reporter: police officers and state agents dropped the hammer on some of oakland's most violent offenders. all part of an effort to rid the streets of violent offenders. >> probably the most violent group of people i've seen in the last few years. >> reporter: they're violent not for money or turf. >> it was basically they hated the other gang. >> reporter: police released this surveillance video they say was committed by members of that new gang. >> we found out fairly quickly that these groups every day were planning on ways to commit violent acts within the community of oakland. >>> this - - >> reporter: this is all part of operation seize fire. oakland city officials hosted a huge press conference with other local state and federal law enforcement which have been leading related efforts. >> there were 23 arrests and in those arrests we have seized 55 firearms that included four assault weapons. >> reporter: afterward, mayor quan told us that it was meant as a warning to those offenders. >

is facing probation from the ncaa. john sasaki is live with how it all stems from free shoes for certain students. john? >> reporter: this school community is disappointed in today's news. it is all laid out in this report from the ncaa, which shows what the st. mary's basketball team did wrong and the punishment it faces. st. mary's college is a catholic school, which today confessed to committing ncaa violations. >> i take full possibility for any, any missteps. >> reporter: the school announced that its basketball team has been sanctioned for the actions of a former assistant coach. >> we have been fully cooperating with the ncaa for over two years on this investigation. >> reporter: the athletic director explained the violations were committed by assistant coach keith moss, who resigned in 2009. >> arranging for housing and providing, you know, smaller benefits such as shoes and workout gear to a prospective student athlete. >> reporter: the school was also penalized for not monitoring the coach's actions closely enough. the penalties include the loss of two scholarships and head coa
